MIGIGO

You already know this, right?

Someone may offer to prepare your pension refund application for free or at a low price. However, an incorrectly completed application can delay your refund or even lead to rejection.

Tax refunds require even greater care. People who appoint an unqualified person, rather than a licensed Japanese tax accountant, as their tax representative frequently report that their refund was never transferred to them.

MIGIGO accurately prepares your Japanese pension lump-sum withdrawal application at the most reasonable price. At the same time, we guide you to the lowest-cost tax refund service offered by a Japanese tax accounting corporation with a long-established record of trust.

Documents to prepare

Documents for a Japanese Pension Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment application

Copy of passport

Pages showing identity, signature, and residence status

Detailed guidance

Prepare pages that clearly show your name, date of birth, nationality, signature, and residence status.

Proof that you no longer have an address in Japan

If required, a copy of your deleted resident record or the passport page showing your departure date

Detailed guidance

If you submitted a moving-out notification to your municipality before departure, this document is generally not required. However, if you were enrolled in a pension system before July 2012, or if the Japan Pension Service cannot verify information from the deleted resident record because it cannot identify your name in Roman letters, upload either a copy of the deleted resident record (住民票の除票の写し) or the passport page showing your departure date.

Bank-issued certificate

A document showing the bank name, account number, and that the account is yours

Detailed guidance

Prepare an English account confirmation or balance certificate issued by your bank. The bank documents you prepare must show the bank name, branch name, branch address, account number (or IBAN), and your own name. This information may appear across multiple documents.

Basic Pension Number Notice or similar document

A document showing your name and 10-digit Basic Pension Number together

Detailed guidance

Prepare one of the following documents showing your name and 10-digit Basic Pension Number together: · Basic Pension Number Notification, · Pension Handbook showing your name and 10-digit Basic Pension Number, · National Pension contribution payment slip or receipt, · Pension certificate, · Notice of revision of pension amount issued by the Japan Pension Service, or · Pension remittance notice. ※ Your My Number, residence card, or payslip cannot be used instead.

Public-pension coverage history

Employees' Pension members should prepare coverage history for each former employer.

Detailed guidance

Enter your public-pension coverage history on the application as fully and accurately as possible. · Employer name · Employer address · Employment period · Type of pension system If you were enrolled in Employees' Pension through multiple employers, the history for every employer is required.

Application deadline

The claim deadline is two years

A Pension Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment must be claimed within two years after the date you last lost coverage under a Japanese public pension system—or, if you had an address in Japan on that date, after the date you ceased to have an address in Japan. The Japan Pension Service's published guidance does not provide a separate procedure to extend this deadline.

If the submitted documents do not meet the requirements or contain omissions or errors, the Japan Pension Service may request corrections or return the claim. There is no published official rule stating whether the original receipt date is treated as the claim date when a returned claim is corrected and resubmitted.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions before purchase

How is MIGIGO more convenient than a free form?

It helps reduce the time spent completing forms and the worry of making mistakes. MIGIGO finds the required information in your uploaded documents, completes the claim, and arranges your confirmed details and attachments into a submission PDF.

Does MIGIGO submit the application for me?

No. You must print the completed application, sign it by hand and submit it directly to the Japan Pension Service through e-Gov or by international mail.

Is tax refund filing included as well?

First, claim your pension from the Japan Pension Service. If tax was deducted from your Employees' Pension payment, you can request a tax refund from MIGIGO's recommended tax accountant after receiving the Payment Decision Notice. MIGIGO can prepare the power of attorney and customer information sheet in advance.

When and what should I send to MIGIGO's recommended tax accountant?

After receiving the Japan Pension Service Notice of Entitlement: Your Lump-sum Withdrawal Payments (National Pension / Employees’ Pension Insurance), send its original, the dated and signed power of attorney, and the customer information sheet to MIGIGO's recommended tax accountant. Initially, send only the claim and attachments to the Japan Pension Service and keep the PDF for the tax accountant. The original is required. Copies are not accepted.

Can I request a refund if my documents are incomplete?

You may request a full refund within 14 days of payment, provided you have not finalized your application by downloading the PDF.

Can I start again after my application data is deleted after 24 hours?

The service period is 12 months from payment. In-progress application data is deleted no later than 24 hours after first storage, but if the application is not finalized and the service period remains active, you may upload the required documents again and restart preparation without an additional payment. After final confirmation, MIGIGO's copy of the application data and confirmed PDF is also deleted after 24 hours, and redownload is not guaranteed.

Does MIGIGO guarantee the Japan Pension Service's payment decision?

Review and payment decisions are the exclusive authority of the Japan Pension Service. MIGIGO does not guarantee whether the Japan Pension Service will pay or the amount paid.
